Orchids do the reproduce by the pollinator transfers. The pollens of one orchid transfer to another and share a special kind of the pollinator relationship with the help of a bird or an insect. The flowers of orchids have evolved to lure the pollinators to visit and pick sticky pollinia from it. As soon as this pollinator visits other flowers, the pollinia are transferred to the flower and it gets fertilized. After the fertilization, a seed of the flowers begins to form. It can take the time from certain weeks to months for the development of seeds inside seed pod. When the seed of the plant is ready, the pod bursts and miniscule seeds start floating in the air.

There are thousand of these seeds in the pod but only some are lucky enough to find the suitable conditions to grow and out of them also only some get the chance to be matured into a plant. Mycorrhizal fungus is needed for the germination of the seed of the orchid plant. These seeds are so tiny that they cannot carry any nutrients with them but they form symbiotic relation with the fungus for getting the food.

A lot of these orchid plants like Dendrobium, Epidendrum and Arundina reproduce asexually. The small offshoots in these plants can be very well be separated by the mother plant when the roots of the offspring are strong enough to be sown in the soil to have a mature plant of its own. A sexual reproduction can be used to have multiple division of one plant. The healthy adult plants can be divided and re spotting for the division to grow separately.

Many types of orchids have developed art of perfuming in order to attract insects, which could be pollinated.

But we must be aware that orchids do not develop odors due to us, but for those who are pollination them.So some orchids smell after naphthalene or the rotten fish meat.
