Reproducing Orchid Flowers

Orchid’s lifecycle is more like the ordinary conventional flower. Like other flowers, orchid lifecycle involves germination, seedlings, seed production, flowering, maturation of the seedlings in plants, reproduction and seed production.

The initial part of orchid reproducing cycle is pollination, which sets into action a chemical reaction. The outcome of this sort of chemical reaction is the signal for orchid to begin an orchid reproduction cycle. When it comes to the visible signs, the very first sign is the limping of orchid flower, the petals and sepals begin to die and shrivel. The period of flowering after pollination differs significantly and several orchids might even take from nine to fourteen months for competing a complete life cycle. In Cattleya orchids and Cymbidium Orchids, the time taken for the maturation of the seeds is about 12 months.

Majority of the species of orchid are epiphytic, which mean that specific adaptations for their habitat should be adhered to it for ensuring survival of species in nature. On the other hand, the Terrestrial orchid has definite soil needs and their adaptation will be to disband a large amount of seed, since it will raise the chances of survival of the species in terms of propagation. This is almost like a waste, but from the large amount of produced and disbanded seeds only a little percentage in fact land in the suitable environment to grow.

The orchid plants differ significantly from the conventional reproducing plants, as the seed of orchid lacks endosperm. The orchid seeds require fungus for the purpose of germination. The fungus acts as endosperm for giving the needed energy. The specific fungus, which orchid species need for complete orchid reproduction cycle is known as the mycorrhuza fungus.
