Reproduction of Phalaenopsis

Phalaenopsis is mostly reproduced with keikis. The baby plant is an exact clone of the mother plant, sometimes flowering while still attached to the mother plant. Keiki is a small plant growing from one node along the flower stem.

example of Keiki

This may be a natural phenomenon, but can with the help of hormones encourage orchid to the creation of keiki. Keiki must be removed from mother plants, when it has at least 3 roots long 5 cm.
Keikis are cut below and above the stem, leaving a small piece of stem on the baby plant, so as not to damage the keiki.
Then you plant keiki in the middle granular substrate.

Mounting Orchids

What is this?

It is the cultivation of orchids in a little different way. Instead, to be placed in pots, they stretched to a different basis. The base can take a piece of wood, basket, plastic root, which is designed for that purpose, or anything else. Most time use the wood, which must be of sufficient quality that it does not break. It may not be too smooth because roots difficult to stick. The most appropriate is the Acacia, cork, and the vine. Attach to the orchid by lacks, raffia or pant hose. In doing so, be careful not to break the roots. Next to fasten moss. If you collect moss in nature, wet it for some time in the water to get rid of tiny animals. Orchid is necessary to spray at the roots, because water evaporates faster than in the crucible. The plant can be attached to the hang-up, so that orchid grows up or down.

Orchids for Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day will be here shortly and I wanted to give some of you lovers out there a chance to brighten your lady's life, or maybe your own. Don't get me wrong, and I love roses, but sometimes it is more fun to change the rules just a bit or introduce a new tradition.
For those of you who want something new and different, try an orchid.
You really shouldn't be afraid of them, despite the decades of hype that have made us all believe only professional horticulturalists can grow them.
There are more than 25,000 kinds of orchids and they grow in climates as far-reaching as mountaintops and deserts. We always think of them as rain forest plants from exotic places where beautiful girls put them alluringly behind their ears. That is probably a big part of the fascination we have with them.

Orchids

Unlike many houseplants that bloom several times each year, orchids bloom only once, but their blooms last six to eight weeks. If you purchase the correct kind, which you can do if you buy it locally, they will do quite nicely in a south-facing window for the winter and an east window for the summer.Orchids are definitely out there to be purchased, brought home and enjoyed.

Phalaenopsis Orchids-Moth Orchid

This orchid is sometimes called the "moth orchid" because the flowers somewhat resemble large butterflies or moths resting on a branch. They are commonly available at nurseries or garden centers and I've even seen them in grocery stores, too.Phalaenopsis orchids are available in an array of colors, including white, shades of pink and yellow, in solid colors or with faint stripes or speckles.Season of bloom is spring, but individual flowers on the gracefully arching branch or branches may last for months. Mature phalaenopsis plants can stay in almost continuous bloom with dozens of flowers open at one time.Phalaenopsis orchids prefer day temperatures around 75 degrees and night temperatures around 65 degrees, but any room temperature that is comfortable for you will be suitable for your plants, too. A location beside a north- or east-facing window where they will receive bright, filtered light but no direct sunlight would be perfect. You can provide the necessary humidity by placing your orchid plants on a humidity tray. For those unfamiliar with a humidity tray, it is simply a shallow tray or dish filled with pebbles. To this tray you add water to just below the surface; the plant roots do not come into contact with the water. The water evaporating from the tray increases the humidity around your plants.

Moth Orchid

Fertilization is simple. When they are actively growing, use a liquid fertilizer formulated for orchids with every other watering. Phalaenopsis orchids should be watered regularly and not allowed to dry out. I usually water mine twice a week, but your specific situation may require a different interval. As long as the bark potting medium has not disintegrated, your new plants will not require repotting for several years. I'm sure you will find the phalaenopsis orchid to be an easy, rewarding plant to grow.
